The Arts Council of Greater New Haven presents Small Works, Big City, an exhibition curated by Jennifer Jane, in the Sumner McKnight Crosby Jr. Gallery, 70 Audubon St., 2nd floor. The exhibition will be on display during business hours from Wed., Dec. 1 through Fri., Jan. 14. A public reception is scheduled for Thurs., Dec. 9, from 5—7 p.m.

Curated by New Haven artist Jennifer Jane, Small Works, Big City is an exhibition of photography by established and emerging local photographers Chad Anderson, Kathy Conway, Sean Corbett, Jay Cusano, Sara DeGennaro, Angela Gately, John T. Hill, Linda Lindroth, Robert Lisak, Sven Martson, Jordan Nodelman, Thomas Strong, Brittany Whiteman and Joann Wilcox.

The exhibit will showcase works of 8”x10” or smaller, featuring urban images of New Haven and cities worldwide. Small Works, Big City captures the physicality and essence of a city within a petite viewing plane.

Works will be available to the public for purchase at accessible prices, transforming the acquisition of an original artwork from reach to reality.

Curator Jennifer Jane discusses the origin of the exhibit: “The idea for the show came together as we were trying to think of something fun and inviting for holiday gift givers. I asked the photographers to contribute images that were taken in big cities…actually showing people on the street, architecture, that kind of thing.” Through Small Works, Big City, she continues to cultivate relationships with and opportunities for emerging photographers by juxtaposing their work with that of more established professional photographers.

Couple Angela Gately and Jay Cusano are two such emerging photographers hoping for some exposure through Small Works, Big City. The pair produces photographs exploring New York City’s streets through images of the homeless, graffiti, and other urban vistas. Their works will appear side by side with the likes of well-established local photographer John T. Hill, a photographer and graphic artist known for his contributions to New Haven’s art scene for many years.

Painter Steven DiGiovanni has long used photographs to stimulate his visual imagination. As curator of 8 Eyes at the Jennifer Jane Gallery, DiGiovanni has asked four fellow representational painters — Mia Brownell, Nathan Lewis, Christopher Mir and Lawrence Morelli — to exhibit their own photographic creations as well as one painting.

Photography is not a primary practice for any of the four. Only Nathan Lewis has a background in photography. In each case, though, their use of photography is either intrinsic to or representative of their painting approach.

Sean Kernan is a widely exhibited photographer, writer, and pioneering teacher who has focused on the area of creativity. Kernan came to photography from theater, and is the author of two monographs, The Secret Books (with Jorge Luis Borges) and Among Trees. He also maintains an active and successful commercial studio. There will be an exhibit of his photography at the Jennifer Jane Gallery from Mar. 25—Apr. 17, 2010. An opening reception will be held Thurs., Mar. 25, from 5—8 p.m.

His exhibitions include: Centre Regional de la Photographie, Duchy, France; Biblioteca Alexandrina, Egypt; Photosynkiria, Thessaloniki, Greece; William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut; Hellenic-American Union, Athens; Sala Bustos, Guanajuato (Mexico); Museo de la Ciudad, Queretaro, Mexico; Kunsthaus Santa Fe, San Miguel de Allende (Mexico); Friends of Photography (San Francisco; Wesleyan University, Connecticut; Whitney Museum (New York).

He has been published in the New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, New York, Harpers, Bloomberg, Communication Arts, Graphis, Polyrama (Switzerland), Photo World (China), as well as magazines in Iran, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland.

He has taught and lectured at the New School/Parsons, Art Center (Pasadena), ICP, University of Texas, Austin Peay University, Wesleyan University, Hallmark Institute, and both the Maine and Santa Fe Workshops. He is a frequent speaker at conventions, corporations and graduations, and has won numerous awards, most recently an Honorary Doctorate from Art Center in Pasadena.

He has written about creativity, the arts and commerce in Communication Arts, Graphis, and Lenswork, among others.

Joy Bush's artist statement:

The Latin word abesse, which means absent, away, wanting, provides the intellectual and emotional structure for these photographs. I find that I am drawn to places where I feel the visual echoes of human presence places that people seem to have left and that hold no certainty of their return. The photographs are structured from shadow, light, and color, and often use some barrier, however abstract. These images are from trips to Bonaire and England, as well as from walks I took in Connecticut during the last two years.

Joy Bush is a current Jennifer Jane Gallery Photographic Society Member. Bush has decades of experience as a documentary and fine art photographer. Her photographs have appeared in The Village Voice, The New York Times, Connecticut Review, and many other publications. She is represented in the permanent collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, the Yale Medical Group Art Place in New Haven, Connecticut, and in many private collections. Along with the work she is presenting in the series Abesse Joy also makes black and white Pawtraits. "Pet Portraits of Distinctions" grew out of her love for animals and her fascination with the Rembrandt-esque black and white photography of Hollywood in the heyday of great studio portraiture of the 1930s and 1940s.

There will be an opening reception this Friday evening for May Day: 1970, an exhibition of photos by Tom Strong and John T. Hill documenting the historic protest on the New Haven Green. The reception coincides with Opening Night of Westville's ArtWalk.

Tom Strong and John T. Hill were two of many photographers who documented this event. Their photographs exhibited at the Jennifer Jane Gallery give a glimpse of the time and place - showing many of the leading participants, the banners, and general atmosphere of the event.
